My Opinion

“Hope is not lost today... it is found.”

Finally I was able to admire this highly anticipated feature film. Although, I wasn't waiting impatiently for this new episode, like so many millions of other Star Wars fans. I always have to think hard while trying to situate this Star Wars movie in the whole saga. All that prequel, sequel or semi-sequel mumbo jumbo isn't something I'm thrilled about. To be honest it annoys me immensely. When I was an 11-year-old boy I went to the theater, together with an uncle, to watch the very first Star Wars movie. Afterwards I came out of the theater totally flabbergasted. It just knocked me of my feet. This was, at that time, never seen in any previous movie and was quite impressive. Especially for a young boy like me. The following two sequels build further on these foundations and kept the magic around Star Wars alive.

The magic disappeared for me the moment Episode I (To be clear, not the very first movie, but the first movie in the complete saga) came out. Hopefully they won't release an episode situated even further in time, otherwise they have to renumber the whole shazam again. Don't get me wrong. Episode I wasn't bad looking! That would be a joke. I'm sure that 22 years after the first original film was made, the filming techniques and the creation of computer animations improved significantly. Not? So for me the package on its own was more stylish and impressive, but the content was soulless. I had such a "lets-think-up-yet-another-episode" feeling (and that feeling stayed the next two films). Commercially "The force Awakens" was a masterstroke. "Let's go back to the essence and the spirit of the first movie" the masterminds of Lucasfilm thought. Maybe "The Force" woke up in this film. In my eyes it's just a harmless pilot flame what's left.

R2D2, C3PO and Chewbacca stood the test of time well. The only ones who couldn't stop their aging process, are Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. However, you can only see the latter for a few minutes. That's just to make sure there's room for some more sequels. And again, lets hope there won't be a prequel for this one, otherwise you can expect a Star Wars 4.2 and 5.2. However, I was wondering if the story, some events and the ultimate outcome hasn't been used before. Yes indeed. Just put the original film next to this version, and you'll soon find several analogies. And that even without a magnifying glass. It all looks well polished and stunning (the chase scene with Rey controlling the Millenium Falcon while being chased by two Tie Fighters, is breathtaking), but it had less impact on me as the very first film. I even knew when the famous phrase "May the force be with you" would be used. I think there's also a tiny, small "force" inside me!

Summary :
Alicia is a young real estate broker who stumbles on an old apartment building, where she plans a secret and romantic meeting with her boyfriend Simon. But they don't know, that the lessor has sent some murderers to kill the last remaining tenant. When Alicia and Simon catching them in the act, they are forced to run, hide and fight for their lives.

Genre

Country : Spain

Bruno Sevilla : Simon
Oriol Tarrida Homedes : El Liquidador

Director : Rafa Martinez

My Opinion

A Spanish horror / slasher / thriller about the phenomenon of forcibly removing elderly people out of their homes by criminal real estate agents, who'll use that space to build luxurious apartments. That's what you'll read at the beginning of the film. Strange but true, the used language during the entire film is English (apart from a few harsh Spanish swear words). For once, I wished it was Spanish. Not only because I find Spanish a delicious sounding language but also because it would benefit the authenticity of this film. What really terrifies me is the fact that these evictions really happen there. Apparently there were more than 46,000 evictions in 2012. That's more than 500 a day. Terrible! I don't know if they use the same technique as in "Sweet Home". I hope not, of course.

Ultimately it's just a stupid movie. Full of stupid decisions, stupid coincidences and probably the dumbest Spanish girl you can find in that sunny country. She's one of those girls who drops her cell phone or flashlight at the most crucial moments of course (I'm forcing myself not to start about her being blond). I'm aware that these kind of incidents always occur in this type of movie. But every time I'm annoyed by it and I start to say things like "Oh come on" and "Not again, stupid cow". And also, this is the strangest building ever. It fitted the mood and was ideal as a background and setting for this movie. But still I thought there was something weird about it. It's an old, dilapidated building and most residents already left (voluntarily or horizontally with their feet first). But those rotten doors seem to be soundproof. Apparently no one on the first floor could hear the rattling with the front door and the loud shouting through the mailbox. And when help arrived (in the form of El Liquidador. Nice chilling name) who took care of the victims by using some kind of chemical substance in order to reduce them to dust material and vacuum it away, they were having a friendly conversation on the other side of the hall door. Strange architecture over there in Spain.

The most annoying thing in this film, is the story on its own. I expected more. I was just looking at the screen sheepishly and patiently I waited to see how it would end. That's it. It's far from being exciting. Besides two bloody scenes, there's not much blood to see on the screen. Only when El Liquidado arrives, it gets a bit more exciting. For a short while that is. He's some kind of ultimate solution to straighten out a situation that got out of hand. But haven't we seen this before? Such a rugged, muscular guy who routinely does the dirty work. Usually such a person is moving forward in such a nerve-racking slow pace, while dragging along a huge ax. That's nothing new under the sun. Before you know it, you get a cat and mouse game. And most of the time you can easily guess the outcome. Except in this film. But what was this "Saw" -like end? It was as if I suddenly watched a complete different movie.

Isn't there anything positive to report? Yes of course there is. The location where the whole story takes place looks absolutely stunning (as said before). A gorgeous old building ideal to play hide and seek. A unique and scary place perfect to film a struggle to the death. The camera angles used by the director were sometimes impressive. For instance the excerpts while the rain is pouring down. Or those images of the staircase. Simply gorgeous. But otherwise it was just as bland as a paella without any spices. Everyone dreams of buying a Spanish hacienda at an older age and enjoy the Spanish sun. After seeing this film, I wisely decided to accept the bad, cold weather of Belgium.

The Subjects (2015)

Summary :
Eight strangers go into a locked room for clinical trials on a new drug that gives them superpowers.

Genre
: SF / Thriller
Country : Australia

Cast
:

Paul O'Brien : John
Carlotte Nicdao : Lilly
Frank Magree : Giggles

Director : Robert Mond

My Opinion

"The Subjects" begins abruptly with a commercial about the pharmaceutical company SunSky. Unfortunately the quality of this fragment wasn't maintained the entire movie. As slick and polished as this clip looks like, so limited and dated the rest looks. The entire film takes place in one location. A discarded music studio that looks quite dusty. It's there where the eight guinea pigs are waiting, in order to take part in a medical experiment. You'd expect a high-tech, pharmaceutical company would have a glitzy, modern laboratories to do such experiments. This seemed rather like an out of use, abandoned hangar somewhere in a ghetto.

The eight strangers participating in this experiment are told that they'll take a new type of medication, in the form of a pill, and they need to stay for eight hours in that room. After that period, they can leave and will receive a reward of $ 800. This new chemical substance gives each person some kind of super power. And it looks like they don't have control over it. So you get some ordinary people, in essence insignificant persons, in a difficult situation with no way out. So it entirely degenerates into a tense, psychopathic atmosphere. And this while scientists are observing everything by use of cameras. So they are trapped like rats. Or better, trapped like Guinea pigs. As the title of the film says, they are simply ordinary, manipulable subjects.

The idea had potential enough to make it a fascinating film. However, the development left something to be desired. Partially you can blame the budget. "The Subjects" meets all the requirements of a low-budget B-movie. The actors are total strangers, the setting where everything takes place looks cheap and the effects are taken out of a vintage bag of tricks. The only thing this film could save would be a strong, original story and some brilliant performances. Unfortunately it goes wrong in that area as well.

The actors play a variety of personalities, ranging from extremely annoying to highly entertaining. Most annoying characters are Jenna (Emily Wheaton) and Devin (Spencer McLaren). The first was the height of stupidity. A conceited, narcissistic bimbo whose only purpose in life is to attend as many parties as possible. Devin is a nasty, aggressive guy who fortunately experiences the unpleasant side effects of the pill first. Corey (Paul-Henri) is the weirdo of the company. Someone who was at Woodstock I guess and I'm sure he used some other pills. John (Paul O'Brien) can be seen as the most normal and relaxed person. The magic tricks he knew were a little bland. After his first childish demonstration I was convinced that this would be important in the complete story. Nikki (Katharine Ines) is the appropriate person to complement John. A seemingly very normal, nice looking woman who prefers to reveal nothing about herself. Lilly (Charlotte Nicdao) is a timid girl. She's the complete opposite of Giggles (Frank Magree), an Australian big mouth. The latter created a bit of animo and evoked a few chuckles from me. Highly amusing. And somewhere at the end, Phil (Tosh Greenslade) shows up. His pill had one of the most interesting effects.

A colorful group which ensures some lively conversations. But the special effects were incredibly bad. Especially what happened to Devin was poorly displayed. The superpowers weren't very original either. I wondered what's so special about a force that enables you to change color. The most imaginative powers were the teleportation part and time travelling. Lilly, however, suddenly emerging as an expert in time travel, was a bit nonsensical and quite a coincidence. You're witnessing the whole movie how individuals get into a panicked state and how these characters interact and react to each other. It's not really exciting and there are too many aspects that remain unclear. A unique concept, though. But my view about Australian films being among the better movies generally, is being undermined a bit with this film.

Summary :
Alex, a mysterious thief, is pulled in by her former partner for one last heist. She quickly finds it was never just about the diamonds. Genre
: Action
Country : South Africa/USA

Cast
:

Olga Kurylenko : Alex Farraday
James Purefoy : Mr. Washington
Morgan Freeman :Senator

Director : Stephen S. Campenelli

My Opinion

“Nobody saw your face and I shot that dumb prick.
So if I get popped, I go down for the job and a murder.”

"Momentum" is a swirling, action-packed crime film, supplemented with a political intrigue and a professional female fighting machine who causes quite some damage on her opponents. This is once again another spectacular action film, you'll remember nothing of after a while. How they succeeded in enrolling Morgan Freeman for such a minor part, is a mystery to me. However, his cooperation was no guarantee this would result in a masterful and memorable film. His contribution is virtually nil. Hopefully Freeman won't end up in a Willis-Cage situation. That would certainly be a sad thing for such a talented actor.

Alex (Olga Kurylenko) is a female thief who commits a bank robbery with her companions in South Africa (in "Tron" looking, futuristic costumes). The robbery ends in a fiasco after one of the gang members freaks out, gets murdered and Alex's identity is being revealed. What they didn't know was that there's a USB stick among the captured diamonds. This flashcard is pretty valuable for an American, corrupt senator (Morgan Freeman), who sends a series of assassins, led by Mr. Washington (James Purefoy), after them. They liquidate anyone that comes in their way and who isn't willing to corporate in their search for this item.

"Momentum" is a no-frills film with a series of well choreographed scenes that follow one another at breathtaking speed. An entertaining film, with a female action hero in the leading role, that you can watch in a mind-to-zero state. This due to the lack of any logic (the car driving backwards in the garage was completely ridiculous). The ending feels unsatisfying and is clearly a step towards a sequel. I guess we'll be waiting for that endlessly, because this film wasn't really successful. It's not truly memorable. The only thing I can remember vividly, is that Kurylenko is blessed with a heavenly looking butt and that it's repeatedly shown here. Her expression, however, is almost identical to her perky and beautiful buttocks. Impassive and tight, that is. The only one who really amused himself in this film was Purefoy. His performance as the fierce, cold-blooded Mr. Washington, who still finds time to make a funny remark during ice-cold liquidations, was at certain moments (Uh yeah) quite magnificent. The interaction between the two opponents was fascinating.

So if you feel like watching a fast-paced, thrilling action movie, "Momentum" will provide some momentary amusement. It's packed with fight sequences, chases and lots of bullets flying around, while Kurylenko wriggles her athletic body every which way to avoid hem. A superficial film just to forget about a rainy day.

Summary

When Grady, an assassin with a genetic disorder that renders him unable to feel pain, is sent on a high-stakes assignment, his world is turned upside-down after an attack when he awakens to discover that he can feel pain for the first time in his life. With the clock ticking and his greatest asset gone, Grady will go head-to-head with his greatest fears and unspeakable enemies, while experiencing a tactile world he never could have imagined.

Genre
: Crime/Thriller
Country : USA

Cast
:

Will Kemp : Grady
Brinna Kelly : Zan
William Forsythe : Fairbanks

Director : D.C. Hamilton

My Opinion

“Do you know , Ezekiel always says that there’s bad and then there's me.
You see, your boss Pearl over there. He was very, very bad.
I'm worse.”

You think Grady (Will Kemp) is the new Batman? Or the successor of Spiderman? Maybe a reborn Superman or Ant-Man? So could he be a new super hero? No, not at all. Not in the strict sense of what we mean by a superhero. The only thing that makes him unique is a genetic disorder, which makes him totally numb. He feels absolutely no pain. Or the pleasure of a hot shower. Or even the blissful feeling of soft velvet sheets. Well, so erotic feelings won't please him either. You can say, he's the ideal assassin. Someone who laughs away the toughest tortures used by opponents who captured him. And that's how this highly original film starts. The first thing I thought was: "What the hell is this?".

Let me get straight to the point. This was a unique film that scores highly in terms of humor. The creativity meter is set to maximum, if you just look at the main topic. This is a typical example of an "under the radar" movie you eventually watch in a dismayed state. It's such a film you'll watch with a "ok-we-will-see" feeling and afterwards you come to the conclusion that you've witnessed something unique. My expectations were very low. If you're assuming this is just another crappy B-movie, you'll surely be pleasantly surprised. First the cast. Will Kemp, Brinna Kelly (besides looking extremely delicious, she's also a talented writer who co-wrote the script) and Doug Jones were totally unknown actors to me. But they played an outstanding role. There are also some well-known actors such as William Forsythe and Vinnie Jones. But lets be honest, the two protagonists are the shining stars in this entertaining film. Will Kemp was sublime. Grady is a cold-blooded hitman with some fighting experience and skills. He surely could be accepted as a member of "The expendables". But above all, his sense of humor and imperturbability appealed to me the most. He has this sort of "Bruce Willis" attitude. The correct dose of dry humor. A feature that the original Willis apparently forgot about.

But Brinna Kelly was also perfect for the role as Zan. A nurse at the wrong place and time who gradually helps Grady with the task he must accomplish for Ezekiel (Brent Spiner). The funny thing is that Grady got some kind of medication which resulted in him having his sense of feeling back again. Not exactly an advantage if you're in the middle of a job with a deadline and you are aware there might be some painful confrontations. A nice twist in the story. And trust me, it's not the only one. The moment you think you know how the story is put together, a new and surprising twist shows up and turns the whole story upside down. I don't mention this often, but this time I can only admire the work the scriptwriters did here. Rarely I've seen such an original, creative and entertaining film. And this because of the unique script and the excellent performances.

I surely recommend “The midnight man”. It's an entertaining mix of action, gory bits (no imagination needed to figure out what you'll see when they use nails during a torture session) and meticulously used humor. Once again a proof that among those films that aren't placed in the spotlights and countless movie lovers are awaiting for, you can discover a pleasant surprise. So go watch this movie and enjoy!

Krampus (2015)

Summary :
 Nederlands Hier
When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family's home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

Genre
: Horror/Comedy
Country : USA/New Zealand

Cast
:

Emjay Anthony : Max Engel
Adam Scott : Tom Engel
Toni Collette : Sarah Engel

Director : Michael Dougherty

My Opinion

“Ben kuklinski is always ragging on Christmas.
He even told the first graders that Santa was just a cheap marketing ploy invented to sell Pepsi.”

"Krampus" was a movie I was really looking forward to. Partly because I picked up a radio report about a ban in some Austrian villages to use this folklore figure (I had never heard of it by the way) and his assistants. And partly because I was curious how a horror Christmas movie would look like. It's something different than the annual traditional Christmas junk we see on the tube. I was a little bit disappointed about this film, because the horror level is pitifully low. It was amusing though, on some level. Unfortunately it wasn't really the Krampus who predominated this movie, but rather his vicious little helpers. And those helpers really looked like dressed up villagers who just returned from a  "Krampus" festivity in some tiny Austrian village. I'm just not sure yet whether Krampus has something to do with Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas.

The first part of the movie was matchless. Those slow-motion images during the opening credits where a christmas shopping frenzy is being portrayed. That fighting mass of buyers rolling over each other. The security guards using their stun guns. Salespersons tumbling from ladders. And fighting children during the christmas recital. Brilliant although slightly exaggerated. But believe me, this is how I feel about the others during christmas shopping. The most important person here is Max (Emjay Anthony), who still believes in Christmas. He's surrounded by his caring parents Tom (Adam Scott) and Sarah (Toni "Miss you already" Collette), his older sister Beth (Stefania LaVie Owen) and his Omi (Krista Stadler). The latter is a very cuddly grandmother and the personification of Christmas. Max has just one wish. He wishes that Christmas would be again like yesteryear. A cozy, warm family celebration, full of joy and affection. That wish is pretty much ruined the moment Sarah's sister shows up, with in her wake a moronic, antisocial family. A tactless guy, possessed by weapons. Two ludicrous daughters who look like solid quarterbacks and urinate while standing. A lazy, fat, stupid looking son whose only goal in life is to eat everything he can get his hands on. And as icing on the cake, an alcoholic, pedantic aunt. This colourfull mixed bag of individuals are the cause of some chaotic situations, the moment they arrive there as an unwanted winter storm. The situation escalates completely after Max tears apart his Christmas letter with his wish written on. And that's the signal for Krampus to appear.

This hilarious part was magnificent. Extremely funny, perhaps bland but hugely recognizable. I'm sure every family has a bunch of relatives like those of Max. What's intended to be a period of peacefulness, self-reflection and affection, sometimes ends up here and there in a family quarrel with old feuds being stirred up and feelings of jealousy taking the upper hand once again. The result is that there's hardly anything left of the traditional Christmas feeling. And that's why Krampus and his helpers show up. Not to reward anybody like Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus do. But to penalize those who don't believe in Christmas anymore.

And that's where the horror starts or should start, because it isn't really creepy or frightening. Don't expect scary, gory scenes. It looks more like a Christmas version of "Goosebumps". The fact they made it in such a way, so young people could watch it too, probably has something to do with it. Although it's sometimes very exciting and thrilling. And the SE-department did a great job. The neighborhood which is turned into an icy landscape looks excellent. And the furious Krampus walking over the rooftops with the additional dismal sounds of rattling chains and ringing bells, looks also impressive. Only those creatures terrorizing the whole family, are just comical instead of terrifying. Krampus his imposing stature is seen repeatedly. Unfortunately we can only admire his phiz at the end. When talking about the comic-part of this movie, you can say it's kind of successful. But the horror is just like the Christmas spirit in this film, totally absent.

Lila & Eve (2015)

 Nederlands HierSummary
Lila, a grief-stricken mother reeling from her son's murder, attends a support group where she meets Eve, who urges her to take matters into her own hands to track down her son's killers. They soon embark on a journey of revenge, but also recovery.

Genre
: Drama/Crime
Country : USA

Cast
:

Jennifer Lopez : Eve Rafael
Viola Davis : Lila
Aml Ameen : Stephon

Director : Charles Stone III

My Opinion

“God, grant me the serenity to accept
the things that I cannot change...
The courage to change
the things that I can...
And the wisdom to know the difference.”

Lila (Viola Davis) and Eve (Jennifer Lopez) are two grief-drawn women after their children have been killed. Unlike others, they won't throw in the towel and want to take revenge. It's time they take matters into their own hands. You guessed it. It's just another revenge movie that's being released on mankind. This time it's about two grieving mothers who are about to face a brutal drug gang and their errand boys who are dealing on every street corner. That's an element that doesn't occur often in a revenge movie. Unfortunately it came across as quite implausible. The police hit a dead end, so the investigation isn't really progressing (but according to the two avenging angels, this is due to their laxness because the victims are colored individuals). However, the two innocent housewives, whose lives only consist of doing household chores, redesigning the interior and attending a support group for parents of murdered children, can get to the kingpin of this drug gang, just by using simple interrogation techniques and some data from a mobile phone.

The acting part was far from bad. At certain moments Davis and even Lopez perform excellent. Davis was a complete stranger for me (that's because I hate television series and haven't seen "How to Get Away with Murder") but she's excellent at the beginning as the mother who collapses and survives on pills. A brilliant piece of acting. During the confrontations with the young rascals, her appearance as the clumsy fury wasn't that successful. I was more surprised about Lopez who, unlike her part in "Parker", showed she really can act decently. She was quite convincing as the self-righteous, rebellious vigilante who thinks that the concept of the support group is a bit too soft. She's the driving force behind Lisa's revenge.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention enough or I was tired while watching "Lila & Eve", because I really didn't see that plot twist coming at the end. The film on its own wasn't so impressive however. It was rather a "ah, that's the direction they are going" feeling I had afterwards. The closure was a bit too sentimental and unreal. Ultimately, it's only an average, ordinary film so to speak. Nothing exciting or captivating. Even the acting couldn't save this film. In short, it's just one to add to your list of movies you should watch when you're retired, because you have plenty of time then.

The Sisterhood of Night (2014)

 Nederlands HierSummary :
When Emily Parris exposes a secret society of teenage girls who have slipped out of the world of social media and into another world they've discovered in the woods at night. When she accuses the girls of committing sexually deviant activities, Emily sends the small American town into a atmosphere of hysteria and the national media spotlight. The mystery deepens when each of the accused girls upholds a vow of silence.

Genre : Drama
Country : USA

Cast
:

Georgie Henley : Mary Warren
Kara Hayward : Emily Parris
Willa Cuthrell : Catherine Huang
Olivia DeJonge : Lavinia Hall

Director : Caryn Waechter

My Opinion

“Everything that happens here stays between the three of us.
You have my vow of silence.”

This is just a simple movie. The kind that gets the label "weekend movie" pinned on. Not that it was so bad, but it wasn't impressive stuff either. It's a contemporary sketch of how a seemingly innocuous post on a blog can start an unprecedented smear campaign, in which the allegations take disproportionate forms. Before you know it terms such as occult sect and lesbian sex-goddesses are abundantly being used. In the end it's just a circle of close friends. A bunch of teen girls jumping around in the woods at night, sharing their deepest secrets with each other. Of course the biased and gullible inhabitants of Kingston resolutely interpret this in a whole different way. It looks like a modern version of medieval witch tribunals.

It's all about Mary Warren (Georgie Henley), a charismatic girl who decides to wrap herself in the sound of silence after a collision with fellow student Emily Parris (Kara Hayward). Together with two other girlfriends Catherine (Willa Cuthrell) and Lavinia (Olivia DeJonge) she forms "The sisterhood". A mysterious and secret covenant you can only join through a personal invitation. This little groups obtains over time a renowned reputation, with the result that almost all teens crave to receive an invitation. Likewise, the jealous Parris, a blog writer without any followers (except herself). The day she makes up a shocking story about "The Sisterhood" and posts this on her blog, her virtual reputation increases and gets a multitude of followers, while the reputation of the secret alliance goes in the wrong direction. However, the members abide by their oath they've made, which feels as if they plead guilty.

At first sight you might assume there's indeed something occult going on. The way Mary gazes sometimes, looks kind of demonic. And yet it's no horror. It's a successful portrait of how unfounded allegations take on a life of their own, leading to a hysterical reaction of parents and other residents. Turns out later the end result is tragic. It's creepy to see how much influence social media have nowadays and how teenagers deal with this. Willingly and unwillingly. The moment the members of the secret club distance themselves from these modern media, they are suddenly seen as otherworldly.

No horror, but a film about misunderstandings and misunderstood teenagers with their own individual and family problems, who are looking for a place in society. "The sisterhood of the night" is an average movie that rises barely above average. It's not the acting, because this wasn't so bad. Maybe it was because the acting felt unnatural and far fetched sometimes. Especially the two protagonists Henley and Hayward. I had the impression they really did their best to play the "bitch". The most successful part (but also a limited one) was provided by Kal Penn as the guidance counselor Gordy Gambhir, who tries to persuade the girls to confess everything and ultimately draws the short stick. Personally I thought the gesture of reconciliation at the end of this sluggish film, was a bit exaggerated.
